[HP Omen 45L] Black screen + fans max — OCCT Power Test crashes after 9 min, temps normal

Open | Hardware

Hi everyone,

I've been chasing a frustrating issue with my HP Omen 45L (i7-14700K + RTX 4080 SUPER).
Sometimes while gaming, or even just sitting in a menu, the screen suddenly goes black, all fans ramp up to 100%, and I have to hold the power button to shut it down. No BSOD, no reboot.

Temperatures are perfectly normal:

  • GPU: ~70–75 °C (hotspot <100 °C)
  • CPU: ~75 °C under load

I ran OCCT Power Test (AVX2 + Discrete GPU) and the system crashed after 9 minutes, even though temps and voltages were perfectly stable.
Reducing the GPU Power Limit to 80% didn’t help.

At this point it looks like a power delivery issue (PSU or GPU VRM), but I’d like to get a second opinion.

What I’ve tried so far

  • Monitored with HWiNFO64 → temps and voltages normal
  • Ran OCCT, FurMark, multiple games → same black-screen crash
  • Lowered GPU Power Limit to 80% → still crashes
  • Checked Event Viewer → only Kernel-Power (41), no WHEA or driver errors
  • Reseated GPU 12-pin connector
  • Updated all drivers, BIOS, and chipset
  • Windows fully up to date

Do you think this sounds more like a failing PSU, a defective GPU, or something else entirely?
Is there any possible non-hardware fix left to try before I go through an RMA?

Thanks in advance for your answers and help.

(I made it short but I can provide sensors logs of the crashes if that helps)
