Few questions from a new angler

Discussion

Hey y’all, I’m an extremely new fly fisher and had a few questions I was hoping you could help me out with.

  1. Should I worry about rigs starting out? I’ve seen a lot of folks recommending attaching a few different flys to their rig to increase chances of getting a bite, but I’ve mostly been attaching a single dry fly or nymph to my leader. Should I try setting up stuff like nymph rigs or stick with one fly / nymph while I’m learning the fundamentals?

  2. Would it be dumb to exclusively fish with nymphs as a beginner? I oftentimes lose track of my fly if I don’t have a strike indicator, and fishing with nymphs is a lot more similar to spinner fishing I did growing up. I was thinking this could hopefully help me get a bite because it’ll be easier for me to present the nymph naturally, and I’d get more practice reeling in the fish with a fly rod.

  3. How long did it take you to get your first fish? I’ve gone out 4 times so far for 2-3 hours each fishing session, and I don’t think I’ve gotten a single bite yet lol. It’s hard to start a feedback loop that will make me better if I’m not getting any feedback from fish. I also live in Seattle, so there isn’t really any opportunity to go to a local sunfish pond where I’m a lot more likely to get a bite. So far I’ve tried one over-abundant lake that was like a 3 hour drive, and I’ve also tried 3 different areas of a river near me.

  4. Is there anything you can do at home to become a better fly fisher? I’m currently reading Orville’s fly fishing guide, watching YouTube videos, and spending 2-3 hours per week at my local park practicing casting. Just wondering if yall think there’s anything else I could be doing to improve.

I appreciate anyone who read all of this! I’ve been having a blast getting into this hobby and have been loving all of the time I’m spending in nature. Really hoping to catch my first fish next weekend!
