Finding balance in practice
Hi everyone! I figured I would run this internal delema by the masses on reddit
As I find myself with less and less time due to work and other life changes, my biggest internal struggle has been figuring out how to practice more with less. As a musician, I love classical, jazz, and bluegrass music, but I’m realizing that to reach the level of proficiency I aspire to, I may need to focus on just one style. For background, I studied classical and jazz trombone performance and have been a musician for seventeen years. However, because of an injury about five years ago, I had to stop playing my main instrument, the trombone. Since then, I’ve been playing guitar as my primary instrument for around three years. The challenge I face now is that, with only about two hours a day to practice, it’s very difficult to devote enough time to three distinct genres each with its own techniques, traditions, and demands. Another challenge I have been facing in my practice is having the ears of a musician with seventeen years of experience but the hands of someone with three. Any thoughts would be appreciated!
