Looking for something for game development and 3D art

Laptop Request US

Have my eyes on a few laptops but I keep seeing this sub pop up in my research and would appreciate any thoughts. I already have a good desktop workstation so the goal of this is to be able to be a bit more portable with my projects and work on them away from my office or while traveling.

  • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
    • Looking not spend more than $3000 but could go more if it's really worth it. Really don't want to go above $3500
  • Are you open to refurbs/used?
    • Sure
  • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
    • Not really interested in 2-in-1 but not opposed. Want something solid, portable, with enough battery life to work on a long plane ride or an afternoon away from an outlet.
  • How important is weight and thinness to you?
    • Just want it to be relatively easy to carry in a backpack while traveling.
  • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
    • At least 14 inch or more
  • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
    • Mostly doing development in Unity but also want to be able to run Unreal. Would also want it to be able to run most 3D programs such as Maya. Programs like ZBrush or Substance are less valuable as I have a tablet for that kind of stuff. Don't plan to do any rendering on this machine.
  • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
    • Don't plan to do any hard core gaming on it but of course being able to play some games would be nice. I imagine I'd get that with my above requirements for game dev.
  • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
    • Not really
  • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
    • I've been looking at the Dell Pro Max but kind of unsure what processor or graphics card I should go for. I don't want to go for the $3000+ versions if it's really not needed for what I'm doing. I'm having trouble comparing laptop GPU and CPU to their desktop equivalents. Don't really want to go for Mac as I would like the tools I've written for Windows to be easily transferable between my PC and laptop.

Thanks for anything thoughts or advice!
