Feeling really lonely as a Jewish person right now
It’s my first time posting here. I’m Jewish (my mom is a rabbi and my dad converted when I was little), but I’m not currently practicing. Even so, I’ve always felt a deep connection to being Jewish and have always been proud of it.
I’m not super pro-Israel, but I do believe Israel has the right to exist and needs to exist. I also support a two-state solution, even though I’m not sure it’s realistic with Hamas.
Recently, a childhood friend started posting Instagram stories about Gaza and “freeing” Palestine, and it’s really been bothering me. I try to respect everyone’s political views, but seeing that from someone I grew up with feels different. I’ve muted her account, but I’m at the point where I’m considering blocking her.
I also have another friend who’s pro-Palestine and muting her didn’t upset me as much. I think this one hurts more because we were so close growing up and our families were like extended family. I guess I just feel really unsupported.
I’ve already been feeling isolated lately for other reasons and I’ve lost some friendships over the past few years because of what I’ve been going through in my personal life. Now I feel like I’m losing more friends because of what’s happening in the Middle East.
I live in Europe now (I’m originally from the US) and I don’t have any Jewish friends here. My husband isn’t Jewish, but we occasionally go to Jewish events and he participates wholeheartedly, which means a lot. Still, I just feel really lonely as a Jewish person right now.
If anyone else is living abroad, how do you stay connected?
