My Problem with Knull and the Symbiotes

I will admit that I have not read a lot of the stories that go deep into the lore of the symbiotes, but the main reason I haven’t is I find the concept of the symbiotes in Marvel now boring and overcomplicated. I remember watching an interview where Todd Macfarlane convinced editorial at the time to get Spider-Man back in the red and blue suit by creating a character that emulated the black suit and expanded it into Venom (his words, could totally be wrong). I grew up watching the 90’s Spider-Man cartoon, the Raimi movies, and Spectacular Spider-Man like most early 2000’s kids, and loved what I saw from Venom and Carnage.

But as the whole Knull arc was going on, I was just really getting into comics and I saw him as this edge-lord overpowered god to expand on the symbiotes and it didn’t hook me at all. In recent years, in my opinion, the worst of this was on full display in Insomniacs Spider-Man 2, where there’s the whole invasion arc and the people being turned into symbiote drone/zombie things and it was so boring. I feel like as soon as we had a dozen symbiotes with different powers we lost the plot on what it is, a bad guy patterned after Spider-Man who wants nothing more than to get revenge on the host that abandoned it.

Another example is a smaller one, but when I read Zdarsky’s Daredevil run, which started around the time of the King in Black event, it was kind of hard to accept the symbiotes as a earthwide threat. I feel like there a plenty of examples in Marvel and DC where antagonists related to a specific character work against the larger universe. Examples being Wilson Fisk for the NYC heroes, the Sentinels, Galactus, Lex Luthor, The Joker, the different Lantern Corps. When the Sentinels attack the Avengers, or Batman fighting Lex Luthor I don’t bat an eye, but the symbiotes feel really forced in say a Daredevil story.

Is this a bad take? I’m totally open to reading more into if people having recommendations, I just feel bad that anytime a new Spider-Man thing is announced or a new arc develops, I immediately ignore it when I see that the symbiotes are involved at all.
