Stephen Hillenburg did not express outright disapproval of spinoffs but stated in a 2009 interview that he didn't foresee any for SpongeBob SquarePants because the show's core was SpongeBob himself. He was involved with The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run, which included the development of Kamp Koral, and he was aware of the prequel before his death in 2018. Therefore, he was not strictly against spinoffs, but his initial comments suggest he saw the original as a complete story centered on SpongeBob.
Hillenburg's Stance on Spinoffs
Not a Firm "No"
: While he said he couldn't see potential spin-offs in a 2009 interview, he did not "firmly denounce the possibility".
Focus on SpongeBob
: He believed the show's strength was its focus on SpongeBob and how he related to other characters, making a spin-off centering on another character seem less viable to him.
Approval of Kamp Koral
: Hillenburg was aware of Kamp Koral and had some involvement in its early stages before his death, indicating he wasn't against spin-offs entirely.
The "No Spinoffs" Rumor
Misinterpretation
: The idea that Hillenburg was completely against spin-offs arose from a misinterpretation of his 2009 comments about the show's future.
Context of the Interview
: In the interview, he was discussing the show's immediate future and did not rule out spin-offs for the long term.
Post-Mortem Deification
: Some fans have exaggerated Hillenburg's initial comments into a strict rule against spin-offs, using it to criticize the modern franchise, even though he was involved in the development of Kamp Kora.( so you guys will always make stuff up just to ruin a show everyone now enjoys. And yes I researched and look this up even on X
