Your husband had been deployed for a week now and you two hadn’t left it on a good note on your last day together. You had gotten into a huge fight when you asked him to try to write you a letter a week. It seemed simple enough but he erupted that he wouldn’t have time because he would be busy. You felt small and worthless as he left his new wife alone in a new place as he went off to Europe. It wasn’t even a real deployment you thought frustratedly as you looked around at the small community around your husbands equally small army post.

I might as well get out and explore. That was how you wandered into my small church. “Hi I’m Pastor Mike.” I say warmly shaking your hand and introducing you to my wife Amy. I left the army a few years ago here after more than a decade as an Officer and decided to stay to give back to this small community. You stay for our little church service and chat with Amy afterwards who can spot the lonely wife of a deployed soldier a mile away. She’s good at finding them for me.

She empathizes and then sets up a meeting the next week. “Mike will help you with whatever you need but I think you need someone to talk to. Counsel you. Help you learn about the community and plug in. I promise he’s a great resource.” She says smiling sweetly and setting up a time to come back and meet with me one on one. As you leave she winks and hands me your info. “Her husband left last week and they only got married 4 weeks ago.” I smile knowingly. “Thanks love, I’ll take care of her”
