Is a new valve body worth it after transmission damage?

I have a 2013 Lancer 2.4L with an automatic transmission. When I first bought it, I didn't know it had a CVT in it. I also had no knowledge of them. Then I started to have transmission issues. I bought it with 70k miles on it. After about 10k I took a 3 hour drive and had the transmission over heating "slow down" warning happen. It happened once and it was very hot out and I was driving interstate speeds. So I didn't look into it anymore. Big mistake. I put 60k miles on the car with that light only happening twice. A while ago it stopped shifting after 50 mph. Did the research, ended up changing the transmission fluid (which I'm told is supposed to be done every 30k miles). Replaced the filters. Everyone said not to touch the filter in the pan well we did and there was a ton of metal shavings in it. Did all that, started driving it again and it was great for a couple months. Better than before even. The "turbo" notice didn't even happen anymore when accelerating.

Now all of a sudden its going into complete limp mode throwing a code for the valve body. We plan on replacing the valve body to see if we can get a few more thousand miles out of it. I am well aware that seeing those metal shavings should've told me its done for. But it wasn't done yet. What I'm wondering now is if a piece of metal got stuck in the valve body and can't get out. If that's the case, just replacing it should fix my problems, right? Or... am I looking at only a matter of time before the same thing happens again? But if I can get another few thousands miles out of it, then worth it. (My bf and I are doing all this work ourselves. Not a shop. We both are experienced in mechanics and replacing transmissions.)

Everyone says not to try fixing a cvt but I'm giving up on it yet. These things get a bad rep but I believe a lot of it is due to lack of and improper maintenance. This car has been the best car I've had. 60k miles without a SINGLE issue other than routine maintenance. My question is has anyone else had a similar thing happen? What was the outcome?
