Using Chicken wire or mesh to wrap play pen in?

Our new Cockapoo puppy Pippin is a climbing beast and keeps climbing up the walls of his meta play pen. I was thinking of getting chicken write or mesh to wrap the pen in so he can't get his paws through the slots and climb up. Has anyone tried this before? He was fine at first and sleeps in it with no issues but as soon as he did it once while I was on a quick work meeting he's doing it constantly. We will be getting a crate for him soon but we'd like him to still have the space in the play pen when a crate isn't fully necessary.
