I bled through my clothes in the psychiatric ward. Should I do something about this?
My app told me my period was supposed to come next week. I was at a big meeting in the psych ward (I’m a medical student) with a group of all male doctors, one patient (who’s got severe bipolar disorder). I felt my period start whilst I’m sitting right next to this patient, and can’t even walk out because there are 10 patients standing by the door of the office trying to get in. I’m also wearing light blue scrubs and have no pads on me. I start wrapping a jumper around my trousers, grab the key for the toilet from the nurse and eventually I rush to the bathroom. As I’m speed walking to the patient the patient who thinks he’s a Nazi starts yelling at me, trying to follow me there and throws his vape at me. I get to the toilet, lock myself in and stuff a bunch of toilet paper in my underwear but my trousers are so obviously destroyed. I’m pissed and tearing up in this toilet whilst a patient is banging on the door. I ask my consultant if I can go home and get told I’m taking the mick leaving early, how students aren’t serious like they were in his day. Obviously I’m not comfortable telling him that I don’t want to sit in a pile of my own blood for the rest of the day and I would need some clothes and underwear (context- I’m wearing my university uniform scrubs - I can’t get scrubs from the psych ward as they don’t have any).
I’m tired of this happening at random times, the way I think of it is I know when I'm going to pee, I should know when I'm going to bleed. As I’m a med student and my friend is an engineer, I know we could make something that could track periods better (because why the hell not, in 2025 you have self-driving cars and sleep trackers??). But I want to know honestly if this is a good idea? Is this actually useful?
