Started new job 2 months ago but estranged father is nearing his deathbed
Hey everyone-
Looking for another opinion but ultimately started a new job 2 months ago and just learned from my family and mom back home my dad’s days seem numbered. They shielded me from this knowledge prior because they wanted me to focus on my pursuits and career (I became main contributor to family house).
My dad became estranged from my family 10 years ago and what he’s been begging for is reconnecting with his children. I’ve decided to put past trauma aside and reconnecting with him to make the most out of what he has left.
I am worried about the stress of work. We are entering our busy season when most people buy from us. I’ve got a solid territory in NYC and starting to put together a plan for my boss as to how I plan on contributing still. This company is good to its employees, I’ve worked with them in the past and rejoined after a few years however, working in their NYC hub in the “bigger leagues” there still seems to be a stigma of “not showing up”.
I plan on leaving this week and finishing out then flying home Saturday to see how my dad’s holding up. My brother told me I have time and doesn’t need to be a “next day” thing. The other tough part about the role is the next few months is where you plant seeds for success with your customers or new logos to succeed the following FY. One third of my income gets sent back to my mother and family so these are things I need to consider.
TL:DR entering a busy season in my new role but learned my dad has limited time left.
