Episode 4 Description “Bubbikins”
- The episode opens in Greece. Prince Philip’s mother, Princess Alice of Battenberg, now elderly and wearing a nun’s habit, lives in a convent in Athens. Greece is politically unstable, with protests and anti-royalist sentiment rising. Alice is devoted to her religious and charitable work, but her position is precarious. Alice’s troubled past is highlighted in conversations: her time in mental institutions, her religious devotion, and her estrangement from Philip. Philip recalls his difficult childhood, when Alice was absent due to her illness. His resentment toward her remains unresolved. He insists she is unstable and resists the idea of her moving closer to the family. Meanwhile, in Britain, the monarchy faces growing criticism. The press depicts the Royal Family as out of touch, privileged, and extravagant, especially during a time of economic hardship. An article suggests the Windsors live lavishly at the taxpayers’ expense while ordinary Britons struggle. In response to criticism, palace advisers (and particularly the Duke of Edinburgh) push the idea of a television documentary to humanize the royals. The plan: allow cameras to film the Windsors at home, showing them as a “normal family.” Elizabeth is hesitant but eventually agrees, persuaded that it might modernize the monarchy’s image. With tensions in Greece rising, Alice is evacuated and brought to Buckingham Palace for safety. Elizabeth welcomes her kindly, but Philip is uneasy and distant. He fears her eccentricity will embarrass the family. Alice, however, is serene, devout, and warm with her grandchildren, particularly Anne. Cameras film scenes of the royals doing everyday activities: having barbecues, watching TV, chatting at dinner. The Queen and her family attempt to appear relatable, but the results feel forced and staged. Alice appears briefly, her presence unusual but dignified. The documentary airs on the BBC. Instead of softening public opinion, it backfires: Critics say it destroys the monarchy’s mystique by showing them as dull, banal, and ordinary. Rather than appearing relatable, the Windsors come off as self-absorbed and awkward. The Queen is furious at the failure, regretting she ever approved it. The film is withdrawn from circulation (and remained locked away until a couple of years ago). In the most intimate part of the episode, Alice and Philip share a private conversation. She calls him “Bubbikins” (her childhood nickname for him). Alice speaks gently about her struggles, faith, and resilience. She emphasizes forgiveness, urging Philip to let go of his resentment. Philip, visibly moved, finally softens toward her, recognizing her strength. Their bond, long strained, begins to heal. The episode closes with a reflective Elizabeth, aware that the attempt to modernize the monarchy through the documentary was a mistake. Meanwhile, Philip reconciles with his mother, walking beside her in a rare moment of peace.
