Career Change
Hi everyone, I’ve heard a lot of good things about this subreddit from a few friends who have asked for advice. So I figured it’s time to shoot my shot.
I’m currently pursuing my Master’s in Cybersecurity and I’m about 6 months from completing it. I have no prior background in IT besides 5-6 community college courses I took a couple years ago. I work full time in a different career for the past 4 years and I’m looking to switch careers at some point in the near(ish) future.
My question is what are some things I can do from now until I graduate to help get my foot in the door into the space? I’m well aware this field is not entry level in any aspect. It’s not as easy as clicking “apply” or just simply having a degree. I’m actively studying for the Sec+ as well. Any advice to help get into a blue team style role like a SOC would be greatly appreciated.
I already have a background doing investigations and developing root cause and formal case write-ups, just not in the cyber space. I enjoy working with computers, so the transition isn’t a huge change in the traditional sense, but still new skills and information I need to learn. No stranger to putting in the extra work for a passion.
Any and all advice would be awesome from the people doing the job everyday!
TLDR; Switching careers with no prior background, almost done with Master’s degree and looking for suggestions to help get my foot in the door.
