Federal Register: Timber Import Adjustments and Tariffs
In a recent move to protect national security, President Trump has issued Proclamation 10976, which adjusts the import of timber, lumber, and their derivative products into the United States. Following an investigation by the Secretary of Commerce, it was determined that these imports threaten to impair the national security of the U.S. due to their impact on domestic wood product industries. As a result, new tariffs have been imposed, starting at 10% for softwood timber and lumber, and 25% for certain upholstered wooden products and kitchen cabinets and vanities, with rates set to increase in 2026 unless agreements are reached with trading partners.
President Trump has also directed the U.S. Trade Representative to pursue negotiations with foreign countries to address the national security concerns related to wood product imports. These negotiations aim to adjust import levels and possibly modify tariffs based on the outcomes. Additionally, the proclamation includes measures to prevent tariff circumvention and undervaluation, ensuring the effectiveness of the new import adjustments. This action is part of a broader strategy to bolster domestic industry resilience, create jobs, and enhance national security.
Alongside these adjustments, President Trump issued Executive Order 14353, which focuses on assuring the security of the State of Qatar, and Executive Order 14354, which continues certain federal advisory committees. These actions underscore the administration's commitment to both international security and domestic governance, reflecting a comprehensive approach to safeguarding U.S. interests.
