Naming a child from a second wife after the first wife in the 1800s?
I've just started looking into my genealogy, and this sounds wacky to me, but I guess people lived very different lives a couple of hundred years ago! In this case, it seems that the first wife and husband got divorced, since she was alive for a couple of decades after the guy started having kids with his second wife.
I'm interested in one daughter in particular who has the same name as the first wife, but all the records I've found show that she's the daughter of the second wife. So, did they name their child after the first wife? Which would be kind of dark...I imagine her being tired of her husband's patriarchal bullshit and leaving, and the dude is sitting around full of anger and resentment and who knows what else, to the point where he feels the need to give his next daughter the name of the woman who ditched him, and who knows what he projected on to her throughout her life. 😂
Or maybe the child was actually the first wife's daughter but was raised as the child of the second wife? But if that's the case, that seems like an anomoly, because it doesn't seem common for women to pass their names down to their daughters. I actually haven't seen a single instance of that so far. Any ideas are much appreciated!
