is it okay to continue using cracked iphone 3g with visible lcd due to crack?

Is this risking long term damage to the phone since the internals are exposed? (like possible damage from humidity or simply being in a pocket?) It is still perfectly functioning and alright, just missing a roughly one inch shard of glass leaving the yellow ribbon cable section visible.
