What was travel like from your country before 9/11?

Travel restrictions became much tighter for us, with extensive visa requirements to all countries in the developed world. Just a little over a decade before 9/11, my dad went for his masters in the UK and he remembers it being pretty seamless. My cousin also went to the US in the 90s and there was barely any issues - visa rejections were not as common. Now, visa rejections are more common in my country than acceptance. The searches before and after flights also quadrupled.
