Sunsets

Sunsets are the most photographed subject in the world. As a working professional in Australia let me share with you the secrets of a great sunset photo. Number 1 is critical. Yes it’s clouds!!! A plain orange sky just doesn’t work. Also you must, must make sure the horizon line (if visible) is level. Because that’s how we see the world with our landscape POV. It’s called binocular vision. To give you more options is to look for a centre of interest. Something to draw in the viewers eye leading to the heart of the sky. Silhouettes can add drama and give context and scale for example a person, jetty, bridge or cabin. But make sure the element is recognisable and not just a black blob. Try a change of viewpoint this will create options. Don’t just settle for the first view you see. I have seen so many people walk down to the beach (for eg), take a photo and head back to their car or whatever. Try not to place the horizon line dead centre. Our mind craves contrast so lower or raise your POV. In terms of exposure consider using a technique called ‘bracketing’. Simply adjust either shutter speed or aperture (just 1 stop or speed at a time) above and below what your camera’s exposure setting indicates. Most of all enjoy, take your time, don’t rush best results are often achieved well after the sun has disappeared. And don’t be afraid to capture lots and lots of images. DSLR medium is free - no film 😜 Remember we make photos not take them. Happy shooting! Thank you!
