Metroidvanias with a lot of meaningful character / ability customization?

Hey all,

Basically looking for Metroidvanias or other side scrolling games that have a lot of customization to them. Multiple levels would be preferable (e.g. having a skill tree, as well as maybe a limited number of equippable trinkets that confer special abilities, or something like that).

The other big ask is that the customization be meaningful - it's always kind of a buzzkill to me when I see a huge awesome looking skill tree and then every node is just something passive that I hardly notice or marginal skill upgrades - I'd rather have a tree that's a bit smaller but every link is something noticeable, rather than a massive sprawling one that's 90% "Strength + 0.1" and stuff like that.
