Audio-Technica LP-120 Failed Speed Control

I have had a Audio-Technica LP-120 Turntable since 2015 and recently it started going haywire. Once its turned on and press start, it spins uncontrollably fast no matter the speed settings (33, 45, 78). It does not stop when pressing the start button again and the pitch fader does nothing. However, when set to spin in reverse, all the controls function perfectly.

Any ideas what might be happening?
