A conversation from 2 years ago still lives in my head rent-free. What was actually happening here?
This happened about two years ago on a choir trip to Disneyland, and I still think about it sometimes because I genuinely do not get it.
The scene: A group of us, guys and girls, are hanging out. There's a lull in the conversation. I hadn't spoken in a while, so I just made a simple, observational comment to fill the silence. I said:
"I'm cold."
That's it. No shivering dramatically, no looking pointedly at anyone's jacket. Just a statement of fact about my internal state. I expected someone to respond back with “I am too” or “yeah it is”.
Then, one of the girls in the group turns to me and says:
"Well, it's weird for a girl to give a guy their jacket, it's supposed to be the other way around."
I was so confused. I hadn't asked for a jacket, hinted for a jacket, or even looked at a jacket. I just said I was cold. So I replied, "You just put words in my mouth. I didn't say I wanted a jacket."
Her response: "Yes, but you hinted at it. You were basically asking."
I doubled down, saying, "I literally just made an observation. There was no hidden meaning or question or request."
Then she laid out her full thesis: "When you say that, you are consciously hoping someone will solve the problem for you. Usually as a romantic move to have an act of intimacy of wearing someone else's jacket that you are attracted to."
I was floored. I told her she was running on a completely different script than me, and that I say stuff like that all the time with zero romantic subtext. I wasn't hoping for a solution; I was just... stating a fact. The other girls in the group all nodded along with her, and the guys just stayed silent, staying out of it.
It's been two years. I've replayed this in my head so many times.
My question is... what was that? Why did a simple, off-hand observation about the temperature trigger a full-blown lecture on gendered romantic protocols? Was she testing some kind of social rule? Was she flirting in some weird, roundabout way I didn't understand? Was I genuinely being weird by just saying I was cold?
I feel like I stumbled into a social rule I never knew existed. Someone please help me make sense of this.
