Am I crazy or melee vs ranged is impossible to win?

Is I came back recently and I hate how ranged vs melee works it’s dang near impossible to get close enough to even hit someone depending on the map. What happens is I eventually have to run in the open to get close the second I take like 5 steps put 3 people are lighting me up.
