When Paul speaks of the armor of God in Ephesians 6, he tells us to put on “the breastplate of righteousness.” For the Roman soldier, this piece of armor protected the vital organs—especially the heart. Without it, even a single well-aimed strike could end a life. The breastplate was not decorative—it was the difference between survival and defeat.

In the same way, righteousness guards the spiritual heart. But this righteousness is not our own. Paul reminds us in Philippians 3:9 that our confidence is not in “a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ.” When we put on the breastplate of righteousness, we are clothed in His righteousness—Christ’s perfection covering our imperfection.

The enemy’s greatest weapon is accusation. He aims his arrows at the heart—guilt, shame, regret, condemnation. But when we wear the breastplate of righteousness, those arrows cannot pierce us. The righteousness of Christ declares us forgiven, redeemed, and made right with God. No accusation can stand against the one who is covered in the righteousness of Jesus.

Still, this armor also calls us to live righteously—to walk in obedience, truth, and integrity. The righteousness we receive becomes the righteousness we reflect. As Proverbs 4:23 says, “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”

To wear the breastplate is to live from a guarded heart—a heart secure in Christ’s forgiveness and committed to His holiness. The enemy may strike, but the heart protected by righteousness will stand.

So each day, fasten the breastplate. Remember that you are not defined by your failures, but by His finished work. Let His righteousness shield your heart, and let your life reflect the purity of the One who made you righteous.
