Fairly disappointed by the name reveal of the Ancient Sages today
As many of you may know by now, Nintendo revealed new info on TotK's Ancient Sages as part of Age of Imprisonment's marketing push
The Rito's name is Raphica, the Goron's is Agraston, the Zora's is Qia, and the Gerudo's is Ardi
All fine names in isolation, but I feel like this is such a massive missed opportunity. It felt like TotK and even the new Voice Memories on Zelda Notes were setting up that the Ancient Sages were gonna follow Rauru's example and share names with their OoT counterparts, and Medli from WW. We've known since BotW that Naboris was named after Nabooru, Urbosa directly states as much in her 'Divine Beast Aims' cutscene. The Zora Monuments and Creating a Champion then also confirm that Ruta is named after Ruto, and the logical inference is that Rudania is named after Darunia and Medoh is named after Medli
The initial takeaway of course is that they were named after the OoT/WW Sages, but then TotK released and seemingly soft reconned them to have been named after the newly introduced Ancient Sages that aided this Rauru in a different iteration of the Imprisoning War. Many details in the game set this up. Wearing any given Divine Beast helm would cause the corresponding Sage avatar to wear their ancestor's similar helm of Zonai make (eg wearing Medoh's helm would cause Tulin's avatar to wear the Ancient Rito's helm), the Ancient Sage's shared the same animal motifs in their Temples and helms as what's depicted by the Divine Beasts, and the music for said Temples obsessively quoted the respective Divine Beast and Champion themes, such as being able to hear 'Attack on Vah Medoh' and 'Revali's Flap' within Wind Temple's associated music. Some of the Voice Memories even outright say the Divine Beasts were named after the Ancient Sages in some instances. In Voice Memory 42 for BotW it explicitly states "Divine Beast Vah Ruta was named after the Zora Sage". Not "a" Zora Sage, the Zora Sage, the obvious inference being the Ancient Zora Sage from TotK given the retroactive nature of the Voice Memories and, just, who else would Zelda even be talking about here keeping the lore of the Wild Era self contained? Why use "the" instead of "a"?
All this set up, to me at least, felt so clear. It felt so obvious what the big lore reveal was going to be for AoI, that the Divine Beasts were inspired by the Ancient Sages. It made perfect sense, it cleared up Wild Era's timeline, it gave multi-faceted reason to the music choices, just gave reason in general for the whole helm thing, and those name choices would follow with the pattern set up with the rest of the Imprisoning War already mirroring OoT's plot (Rauru's name and Zelda having her warning go unheard, albeit for different reasons in each game)
Yet that doesn't seem to be the case at all. Sure, CaC states that the Beasts were named after the OoT/WW Sages. But retconning that to have been about the TotK Ancient Sages would've been relatively minor and easy to look past (for me anyway) compared to the potentially gaping plot hole AoI may introduce if this narrative decision isnt handled extremely carefully.
The only feasible reason why I can see this decision skirting by is if these Sages are descendants of the OoT/WW Sages, a sort of mid-stage between them and the Divine Beasts. Maybe the Ancient Sheikah were still actively working on the Beasts during the Zonai age. But even then, that would feel pretty sloppy compared to the fucking amazing lay-up the writers handed to themselves on a fucking silver platter that they just refused to take for whatever reason.
Im still incredibly excited for AoI, and the music choice of the Temples still has some meaning in that they represent the new Sages are honoring the Champions' legacies, which was always the primary intent of the quotes I'm sure I just really dug the potential secondary meaning of the music acting as a hint towards the identities and history of the Ancient Sages. But still, this leaves the helmet and animal motif shit completely unexplained and that's disappointing. It makes all that potential set up feeling like a really stupid and deflating red herring. This would've been such an awesome way to tie up the lore of the Wild Era in a nice little bow, felt like such an obvious conclusion. But it's evidently not the case
