How do y'all feel about this? (504 stuff)

Backstory- counselor for approximately half the school, 504 coordinator as well. New to my district this year, I did not write the majority of the 504 plans that kids have.

Parent emails me asking for what is basically that her son's 504 be amended so he is exempt from the attendance policy when he is having a bad mental health day. (He has ASD, anxiety, etc) I told her I'd take it to our next intervention team meeting, and when I did, my admins were like "hell to the no".

I guess the family is now trying to re-test for an IEP (he had been tested in the past but is ineligible so he was given a 504 with weird-ass accommodations), which like....I don't think that would make a difference (having an IEP as opposed to a 504 I mean).

But later as I was thinking about it, I thought about how we have a few diabetic kids on 504 plans who have it written in there something akin to "attendance policy may be waived if STUDENT has an appointment or medical emergency due to their diagnosis". So I guess maybe I'm being unfair. I do know what it's like to have severe anxiety and need a mental health day, or even several at a time, but like.....it just seems so brazen to ASK for the rules not to apply to you.

Frankly, I just think that if you're so concerned about your kid's attendance, and if coming to school is such a struggle for him, maybe you should just have them go online, but that's none of my business.

Honestly I'm mostly just venting, I think I'm gonna go the problem-solving route of "well, is there anything we can do to make STUDENT feel less anxious in school?", but yeah.
