Remnant from the ashes - disappointingly mid
Let me open by saying I'm not saying this is a shit game or that I'm "right", I just want to share how I felt playing the game, aka my experience/perception.
Hey all, I'm the guy who made this post saying I loved Lies of P (ended up doing 100% + 100% dlc 10/10).
Afterwards I played Man of Medan (another meh experience, but let's not lose focus) then proceeded to Remnant. Now let me start by saying that Remnant is definitely not a bad game and I can see why its strenghts appeal to some people. It just wasn't for me.
I don't care that it doesn't look as good as Lies of P, different studios, different budgets and some of my favorite games look like crap lol. I do care that the level design is awful and the art direction is poor, tho. Like holy shit I went to 4 alien worlds and it all felt so bland. This aliens sure have very human/earth architecture and flora.
As for the level design itself, the whole "building blocks" approach to the world just doesn't work to me. Every room/hallway looks the same, every single dungeon AND overworld section consists of "walk 10 meters, fight a mob, rinse and repeat" with 0 variation in between.
I love roguelike games (I know this isn't one) and randomization when done well is, to me, a plus that makes experiences more unique, fun and unpredictable. I think what makes it so bad in Remnant is that even tho they have these "blocks" and dungeons they are rearranging, they all look, play and feel the same.
Plus backtracking is extremely tedious, especially since not all checkpoints are teleportable to. I feel the reason it's fun to explore in games like Isaac, Gungeon or even Rogue Legacy is because movement is snappy and/or there's convenient fast travel + small maps. Backtracking in Remnant always felt like a pain and the fact that everything looks the same made me not remember where a place I wanted to go back to actually was more than once. All of this made me basically just give up on exploring thoroughly around halfway through the 3rd world since all I'd get 8 out of 10 times was another useless ring.
For a positive, I feel the game gets "dark souls with guns" right to some extent. While it's not reinventing the wheel or delivering some particularly satisfying gameplay, it's fun enough and the combination of sidearm + long gun plus how there are lots of guns and mods with unique uses is really cool. Speaking of the mod system, it's probably the best part of the game.
On the other hand I feel it misses the mark big time on bosses*.* The vast majority of the bosses I fought were the same "here's the boss plus a respawning mob" set up. There were a couple cool fights (flying giant twin moth, last fight, jumping monkey) but most of them offered the same "boss + 5 respawining guys will rush u, deal with it", boring experience. I understand the game rolls the world, so maybe I just got unlucky, but this is about my experience, so that's it.
So yeah, I didn't really have a great time. I feel these are the games that leave the most sour taste in my mouth tbh. A bad game I drop. A mid experience I usually keep playing hoping it'll pick up ad be worth it and when it's not it's just disappointing.
6/10 - Recommend only to people who like a specific kind of game
Again, super respect if it's an excellent game in your opinion and would be absolutely open to talk about the game more!
