Triennial letter Child Support increase NJ

New Jersey

Hey everyone,

I've been paying child support for the past 6 years. Back in 2019, I started at $133/week. After the latest COLA adjustment in 2025, I’m now paying $175/week. My son stays with me about 52 days a year — sometimes more, especially during summer when we go on vacation.

I thought this was fair back in 2019 because my ex was on welfare, in college, and working part-time. But now, things have changed. She has a bachelor's degree, a full-time job, and earns around $50,000 a year. I make about $60,000 a year without a degree. Her rent is only $1,000/month.

Here’s the problem: I just received a Triennial Review letter from the state, and they want to increase my child support to $266/week. It seems like they haven’t updated her financial info at all.

I’m thinking about hiring a lawyer, but I’m not sure if I can fight this myself. Has anyone gone through something similar? What do you all think? Any advice would be appreciated.
