Looking for a workhorse/everyday laptop - US, budget range of $300-400

Laptop Request US
  • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: $300-400
  • Are you open to refurbs/used? Yes!
  • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? I'd prioritize performance, then build quality, then battery life, and then form factor (I really like the thinkpads/ideapads, but I don't need a gimmick like a 2-in-1, or flipable/touch screen)
  • How important is weight and thinness to you? I'd love this to be fairly portable and slim, but weight isn't important (I know that's a contradiction). I also don't want to sacrifice TOO much durability for slimness, but I do love a slimmer profile.
  • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. I prefer nothing smaller than 12", nothing larger than 15". Honestly I probably prefer 15ish"
  • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I would love to play some games, but I'm not looking to run Elden Ring. Likely it'll be games like Stardew Valley and Minecraft. I also do a little CAD, but only for 3d printing. Just things like OpenCAD.
  • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I honestly don't know enough about PC gaming to answer this; I've played a few MOBAs, but that's not a priority for this laptop. Again, I think maybe Minecraft might be the most demanding game I'd run here.
  • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Again, I'd love some decent durability. And a number pad keyboard is a big want for this.
  • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Honestly, I'd love to just get an ideapad or thinkpad, but there are SO many models and I have no idea what to look for, how old I should go on used models, or if I'm looking at a dud or a diamond in the rough. I also HATE when the computer gets slow, but again, I'm a little overwhelmed trying to parse what processors are worth looking for. Any suggestions are super helpful. I'm happy to add additional memory and storage to the machine if the processor and other hardware are worth it. I know I'm asking for a lot on a really low budget, and I appreciate any help y'all can give. Thanks in advance!
