It’s difficult to care too much about climate change when I consider the history of life on the planet.
Like, I get that what we’re doing to the planet is unprecedented, and I believe that a big reason to care about global warming is that we’re changing the planet too fast for life to adapt. I also think that we should care for the planet because not doing so will make life here more miserable than it naturally would be while we wait for the next mass extinction, and also because it’s a beautiful planet, we shouldn’t tarnish it with land, air, and water pollution. I suppose maintaining a supply of clean water is necessary for our survival, though I could counter that technology could clean our water for us when we inevitably run out. So, I agree that we should do what we can to make things more comfortable.
But, does anyone really think we could possibly actually stop the next mass extinction? I feel like it’s bound to happen, and we’re dreaming if we think humans are going to survive it. Like maybe, maybe there are some cave dwellers tucked away that have yet to be discovered that will survive the big one and evolve into a humanoid species. Or perhaps other great apes will pick up where we leave off and dominate in the future. Tbh, I think that animals like octopi and cuttlefish will emerge from the water and be the next rulers of the earth.
All this to say, I’m not a climate change denier, I just really don’t think there’s hope for us regardless of what we do or don’t do. While there are reasons to care for the environment, saving our species seems like the silliest one; even if we weren’t exacerbating the cyclical climate change of the earth, it’s unlikely we’d survive as a species anyways.
