Uninsured Broken Foot. What to Do?

Physician Responded

Last month my sister (22f, 100lbs 5’7) tripped down the stairs at school and broke her ankle area. We avoided going to the doctor because we lost our health insurance due to our dad’s layoff which is the craziest timing because we have never needed the doctor for anything except our annual checkups and vaccinations. Literally, it happened 4 days after our insurance was cut off. No physical or mental issues before this. We don’t take medication for anything except advil for period cramps.

For the longest we’ve been hoping it’s just a huge sprain that’ll go away but we finally went to the urgent care a couple days ago and took an X-ray. Doctor told her that she’s fine and there were no fractures and it was a torn ligament… a couple hours later, he called and said there was a minor fracture 💔 It’s already been a month and it still hurts but not as before. I am so scared for it to heal the wrong way but we have no idea what to do. I want to go to the doctor again for her and get the properly materials she needs. I don’t think she needs surgery, not saying that’s what they’ll recommend but I think they’ll just give her a custom boot/cast, no? But that would probably break our bank.

I could buy a medical boot online for the ankle. Only $50. But would that be enough? Thinking I should get crutches too but she’s not even up for the idea of it. For the past month she’s been walking on that foot and my parents told her it’s good but I’ve been telling her to rest that foot to let it heal correctly. I guess some pressure on that foot every now and then is good but she works and goes to school so there are days she’s on that foot for the whole day. I hope it’s not too late, what is the best solution for us please!

Partially it may be my fault that this all happened as she tripped because she was in a rush to be picked up from school by me. I was running late and texted I was there when I was still halfway across the school, specially her area for pick up. If it doesn’t heal correctly, I’d feel guilty forever.
