Rift habitats from event market

Can you upgrade the rift habitats that you get from the event market with etherium? I thought I saw a post saying you could last year, but I only have to option to upgrade with EC right now. Can I upgrade it with etherium after the event? I would rather do that than spend a bunch of EC on it. Thanks :)
