intergenerational caregiving conflict

Culture/Văn hóa

Hello,

I'm a 30y old man who is currently living at home with my parents. Background: I graduated from medical school in 2022 and moved to California from Seattle for my intern year. I moved back in 2023 because I wanted to transfer to a new specialty back home (something I wanted to do). I lived on my own but moved back to my parents in June because my work is now hybrid and I wanted to save some money on rent. This year, my dad was diagnosed with heart failure, and I've been the person doing most of the caregiving both inside and outside the hospital. My mother is also aging however much healthier than my dad. I'm grateful to have been able to help him through this challenging time. Recently, I've accepted a job in California after graduating in June; however, my parents have been holding the expectation that if I move, I would take them with me. I feel that I'm being pulled between competing expectations (personal autonomy vs. caregiving obligations). I'm quite firm about my decision to move and be independent however I do feel guilty about this after having told them this is what I ultimately want for myself. I'm sure this is a common experience but would appreciate any advice. TIA!
