HP is WILD (crossposted)

So, the previous owner bought subscription cartridges, subscribed to the cartridge subscription, and luckily unsubscribed the printer before they gave it to my wife. now, i try to put in new non subscription cartridges, and it tells me all the cartridges are missing. did hp chat support, and they told me I would have to factory reset which is a complicated process. but WHY is it complicated? i should be able to go into settings and hit factory reset, but that's not the case.. why make things more complicated than they have to be? i didn't want to spend 2 hours on chat with indian jeff so i decided i'm going to get ahold of them another time. anyone have any idea on how to reset this PITA printer?
