Avoiding discouragement
Hi guys,
First off, I know this is going to come off as weird. I know it's probably just my neurotic, defeatist ass convincing myself it's bad.
A few weeks ago I submitted a book to a publisher accepting open submissions. I was super excited because the publisher fit my book exactly (It focuses almost exclusively on queer YA and Na with a preference for own voices).
I got a reply today and while they loved the book, they turned it down. There wasn't anything wrong with it, and they even asked me to submit an NA book to them so I really believe that they see potential in me, but it's hard to not feel discouraged.
I know I should focus on the fact that they liked it, so I know other people will as well... but this is the closest I've come to an actual agency or publisher picking me up in about a decade, and even when I worked my ass off and wrote something they liked a lot, I still couldn't get over the finish line. I feel like I'm always just on the cusp - this is like the third time I've gotten similar feedback and it's like, at what point will I actually get an agency or publisher who actually likes my stuff and has the space for it?
I'd love some advice on actually dealing with stuff like this. Like if they didn't like it it's one thing, the same if it just wasn't up to their standards, but "We loved it but we had to be super selective" isn't something I can really do anything about.
