Saw the movie, it was everything I hoped it would be, but if you’ve got the ‘tism like me or any sensory sensitivities, here’s an overview and advice after being at the immersive IMAX 3D session with synchronised light up bracelets (we didn’t get to keep the bracelets, boo). I desensitised myself a bit to avoid burnout, but had sensory items with me just in case.
Noise levels: Wear earplugs. It doesn’t take away the beauty of the audio, but it makes it way less painful. I saw Wicked in a tiny cinema earlier this year and was grossed out by the audio mix and loudness in the tiny theatre, I missed half the dialogue and it sounded like a distorted mess (even with earplugs), so this is an absolute improvement.
Mix quality: I caught all the dialogue without captions, which was a miracle because we all know how movie audio sucks. Wouldn’t hurt to put a compressor on the dialogue and turn the output down a few decibels to protect everyone’s hearing (and in the ND case, our moods).
Flashing lights: there’s a good amount of flashing, but it isn’t overkill. I wasn’t overly stimulated from the visuals which was another miracle considering my photophobic disposition, but it does need a strobe warning for those who have photosensitive epilepsy. Again, I’ve been desensitising myself, and it’s nothing like NIN live (I shut my eyes a lot for that).
Motion: didn’t get vertigo, so we are good!
Immersive bracelet: needs a photosensitive epilepsy warning, more distracting than anything, nothing special (sorry)!
