MIL makes comments about my weight

Rant

This is 100% a rant and vent right now. We just left my MIL's house after dinner (we in South Africa). As I walked in the house, the first thing she did was pretend to shout back at my BIL (who wasn't in the room), "She has gotten so fat, oh sorry, hello!" Trying to be funny but I was so taken aback, didnt expect it and was just shocked. Just like half laughed but felt the need to justify that im wearing a pre-pregnancy dress so can't be doing that badly.

Then my husband walked in and she said to him "i was just saying, she has gotten so fat" and again, she laughed. My husband's response was definitely unfortunate for him, because he joked along and said yes, huge.

This is a family of banter. There is alot of banter between all of us, but never quite about someone's weight or topics that may be sensitive?

We then sat down for supper, I didnt have snacks and I refused dessert. I really just couldn't shake off the comment and pretend to be okay. So unfortunately, I was quite cold.

I do realise that maybe her word choice was not the best and she could've gone with huge or anything else. Im 23 weeks along so obviously, I have a bump. Preferably, just not say anything about my weight in general. That would be nice.

Why this probably struck such a cord was because 2 weeks ago, at dinner. The last one we went to. She almost complimented me saying im looking good and havent put on much. I thanked her and said its steadily picking up and she responded by saying "well you still going to put on alot of weight and get fat." Again, I was shocked and just so like wtf.

This evening on the way back home, my husband and I spoke about it in the car and naturally, he is trying to be devil's advocate saying that he understands why I am upset and how I perceived it but I must know that it's not how his mom meant it, she would never say something to deliberately hurt me and he hopes I know that. She loves me and and and.

I tried to explain to him how weight is a sensitive topic in general and how I feel so ugly at the moment. I hate my legs and worry about my arms and where im gaining weight but there's nothing I can do to stop it or maintain it. I dont think anyway?

I have not been dieting or depriving myself or Baby of anything so please dont read into this post in a negative way. My baby's health is first priority so I will naturally go with the flow of what my body needs and wants during this time. But deep down, of course. I do just feel.... not myself and I didn't need to hear that as I walked in through the door.

And I don't care if its her way of communicating and what she meant or how i should have perceivd it. I just didn't appreciate it or need it. End of.
