Marks

How appropriate/accepted is it to challenge your marks to a teacher? Like when they docked marks for your work not containing something that they didn’t even ask for. I’m a very literal person and go by the instructions to a tee! But lost marks for not including something that wasn’t specified in the instructions/rubric. Is it bad to address this with the teacher? Thanks
