What time of year Nancy Drew games take place vs. vibes
With heavy debt to hotchkiss-and-tell on tumblr, this is what I think is the "canonical" calendar of when Nancy Drew games take place. I did change or refine some dates based on additional information I gleaned from the games. I would love to explain the reasoning or clarify for ANY of these but 32+ paragraphs of reasoning was... not feasible for a reddit post. So just ask/argue with me about any individual games, it would be so fun!!! I really love this kind of stuff.
So obviously, Nancy exists outside of time, but also she sort of experiences it. It would be fun to do replays not necessarily in a "chronological" order (because Nancy refers to prior cases more or less in release order, so that's the real chronology). But maybe in a "calendar order" as follows:
- Sea of Darkness: January
- Final Scene: three days in late January - early February
- Phantom of Venice: January 25th to February 3rd
- White Wolf of Icicle Creek: January ~18th - 21st(?)
- The Captive Curse: night of March 12th (technically March 13th in the wee hours)
- Blackmoor Manor: ??? some time between November and May, maybe end of March/beginning of April
- The Secret of the Scarlet Hand: April
- The Creature of Kapu Cave: April 9th or not long after
- Secrets Can Kill (original): some time in the spring semester (before May 23)
- Secret of the Old Clock: May 7th.
- Ghost Dogs of Moon Lake: May 17th to May ~20th
- Trail of the Twister: May 20th - 25th
- Haunting of Castle Malloy: May 28th
- Crystal Skull: May 31st
- Haunted Carousel: 1 day between June 5th - 13th
- Danger on Deception Island: 1 day, June 17th
- Shadow at the Water's Edge: some period not longer than a week between June 1st and September 15th.
- The Silent Spy: Some time between July 2nd - 14th.
- Labyrinth of Lies: 1 day, July 6th or not long after
- Danger by Design: August 28th - September 7th
- Alibi in Ashes: September 17th - 18th
- Ransom of the Seven Ships: late summer early Fall, most likely September
- Secrets Can Kill (Remastered): 1 day between September 8 - 22nd
- Shadow Ranch: September 15th - 17th
- Midnight in Salem: October 26th or 27th - October 31st
- Deadly Device: October 29th (and a few ensuing days)
- Ghost of Thornton Hall: a few nights, starting on October 29th at the earliest
- Stay Tuned for Danger: November 13th - 14th
- Waverly Academy: November 21 - 23rd.
- Shattered Medallion: late November
- Message in a Haunted Mansion: First week of December
- Treasure in a Royal Tower: First week of December

Unplaceable games (in my opinion):
- Last Train to Blue Moon Canyon: Fatima comments that it's not the busy tourist season (summer) but that's all we have except for the character outfits and snow on the ground. Still, these place it anywhere between late Fall and Spring.
- Tomb of the Lost Queen: while most archaeologists try to avoid digging in the summer, sometimes it's inevitable. We don't really have any solid clues on this.
- Seven Keys: idk I don't know anything about this game.
I know a lot of people (like me) like to play these games with "seasonal" vibes, like ooooh it's winter, let's play Treasure in a Royal Tower! So I think it's interesting when a "vibes-based" placement of the game clashes with the calendar date evidence we have from it (like Venice and Scarlet Hand are often cited as summery games.) On the other hand, sometimes the game perfectly matches the calendar date vibe, like they really nailed end of November in upstate New York.
