NASCAR’s Charter Dilemma
My understanding of NASCAR’s hesitation toward making team charters permanent stems from concerns over future ownership. Once charters become fully transferable assets, NASCAR would lose control over who can buy or sell them. The possibility of foreign investors.. specifically those with significant state-backed funding raises understandable concern and anxiety. Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), for example, made a $20 billion attempt to purchase Formula 1 from Liberty Media after gaining influence through team sponsorships. Given what What foreign involvement meant for the PGA, NASCAR’s caution is not unfounded.
