Tips on organized tours in and around Rome?

Hi everyone, I’m planning a trip to Rome and considering booking at least one part of it with an organized tour to visit nearby cities and historic regions. I noticed some international agencies (like Memphis Tours) offer itineraries that include Italy and neighboring countries and allow you to customize the route. Has anyone here ever used an organized tour for Rome and surroundings? What was your experience like with guides, transport, support? Do you prefer to rely on an agency or do everything yourself?
