Movies & TV

Every week we will post recommendations for lesser known movies that don't get a lot of attention. Please feel free to add your recommendations too!

Minding the Gap - This coming-of-age documentary is heartfelt, honest, and inspiring. Bing Liu documents his two friends as he and them grow up. We learn how their shared love of skateboarding has helped them escape their upbringings in abusive homes, and become a medium of expression. This is a documentary about friendship, vulnerability, and the uncertainty of maturing, and is one that will stick with you.

Fire of Love - This documentary is a love story and a tragedy. It's a love story between Katia and Maurice Krafft and their shared fascination of volcanoes, a passion that would eventually lead to their deaths. But, rather than focus on danger and tragedy, Fire of Love zooms in on the romantic, impassioned nature of their marriage and shared interest.

The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters - Once named the "video game player of the century", Billy Mitchell was somewhat of a legend in the '90s. Well, in 1999, he set a Donkey Kong record that people thought may never be broken. Cut to 2003, and Steve Wiebe, who has recently lost his job, hears about the record, and decides to make it his mission to beat it, and does. The documentary then shows us the cross-country video game battle as both men vie for the title of Kong champion.

Disclosure - This documentary digs into how the television and film industry has generated a misunderstanding, and vilification of trans people for years. It explores how the portrayal of trans people on screen has rarely, if ever, been empathetic, which has had a lasting impression on the wider public understanding and perception.
