Hot take: OSU students moving themselves is peak false economy

Gonna ruffle some feathers here but whatever.

I've watched FIVE different friends attempt DIY moves in Columbus over the past two years (mostly OSU area to Short North/German Village). Every single one swore it would be "easy" and "save money." Every single one regretted it.

The pattern:

  • Rent U-Haul: "Only $89!"
  • Reality: +mileage +gas +insurance = $180
  • Recruit friends with promises of pizza
  • Friends bail or show up 2 hours late
  • Spend entire day hauling furniture in Ohio humidity
  • Someone's couch gets scratched navigating narrow campus streets
  • Everyone's sore for a week

What actually happened when I hired moviers (in my case it was guys from Bellhop):

  • Booked online in like 10 minutes
  • Got college students who actually WANT to move stuff (it's their job)
  • Cost me $320 for a full one-bedroom apartment
  • Done in 3 hours
  • Zero damaged furniture
  • Zero damaged friendships

The math people ignore: Your time is worth something. Your friendships are worth something. Your back is definitely worth something.

Yeah, you "saved" $150. You also spent 12 hours of your Saturday, burned through goodwill with friends who helped, and probably broke something in the process.

When DIY makes sense in Columbus:

  • You're moving a dorm room's worth of stuff
  • Your parents are helping (free labor that won't hate you after)
  • You literally have nothing fragile or heavy

For everyone else in actual apartments? Just hire movers. Your future self will thank you.

Am I wrong? Convince me DIY is actually worth it🔥
