Gender Questions
I am interested in understanding others that don't believe what I believe and I am finding it difficult to understand what people who are threatened by expansive gender find problematic. I often hear the term 'radical gender ideology' and I struggle with what that actually means. What part is feeling radical?
I know Isaac mentioned the idea that doctors are guessing at a baby's birth as something he found challenging. I guess I would frame that using outward genetalia to identify a child's sex isn't perfect. It's an educated guess and probably accurate much of the time but it's not perfect. And that sex only provides a little information about gender. Maybe guessing is too dismissive? Hypothothesising?
I believe that there are more than two sexes Male (XX) and Female (XY) and we know that there are scientifically intersex people X only and XXY.
I believe that gender refers to the socially constructed roles, behaviors, expressions, and identities of people, and is not limited to a binary of male and female. It differs from biological sex, which is based on physical attributes like chromosomes and anatomy.
I believe that people get to self identify their gender because it is a social construction and there is no right or wrong way to express your gender provided you don't hurt others.
I believe that while society can influence the range of behaviors and expressions allowed within identity sharing about those who have non-traditional gender expression does no harm.
I mean this with no snarkiness I just really want to understand different people's believes. What feels radical, is it something described above? Is it something else? Thanks for being a space of respectful dialogue.
