What should I send to a friend & their family who suffered a loss?

A close friend recently lost someone close to them. I'd like to send them and their family something that will make their time easier (I don't want to send them something that will at all be a burden, even a small burden like it takes a while to unpack or something.) If I lived nearby, I'd make them some freezable food so they wouldn't have to cook for a few days, but I'm across the country. Do people have any suggestions? For people who suffered a loss, what's something someone did/gifted that helped?
