1 year old swallowing difficulty, need advice
I am beyond livid about not being able to get help for my daughter. (Adopted, so not breastfed, formula was the only choice.) When she was born she was very gassy and so they called it lactose intolerance. Then they called it cows milk protein allergy. We tried elemental formulas and other special formulas, I was never sure how much they helped. I tried probiotics, too, fancy ones for infants/colic. No results. She wasn't a big crier at night like typical colic. She then got diagnosed with GERD and we did famotidine for three months. Eventually we stopped that. If I am honest, none of these things really made a huge difference. She's weaning onto cows milk now and I am seeing no change for the better or the worse.
We have been struggling with transitioning to solids since 9 months. I tried purees starting at 5 months periodically but she wasn't interested and it stressed her out. It wasn't until 9 months that she even showed any interest. She ate good for about 1 week, then stopped wanting us to feed her. She slaps the spoon away spraying puree everywhere. When we let her self feed, she just nibbles, licks, tastes, and spits the food back out. She maybe ingests a total of a teaspoon in one meal of actual food. I think it's because she can tell she won't be able to swallow it if she eats more. She seems super hungry. She was drinking 40 ounces of formula per day and waking up every 2-3 hours at night for more bottles because she needs food but we can't get it into her. She is too young for protein shakes.
The biggest symptom is...she gags A LOT. Gags during eating, gags when there's no food at all in her mouth. She'll just be sitting there in the playpen and will start gagging. Sometimes she gags on pieces of paper or carpet fuzz that she finds (I vacuum constantly and she still finds things). She just gags. Daily. Several times a day. We told the pediatrician and she didn't think it was a big deal. Maybe I understated the problem to her. I don't know.
She is teething and drooling and biting on things obsessively, and had another tooth break through in the last 24 hours so that could be contributing but things have kinda been like this for a long time so I don't think teething is the root cause.
I finally got her a feeding consult appointment but it's not until late November!! Her sleep is disrupted by hunger and has been for months. She now has low hemoglobin. Looking back, whatever is going on has been the entire problem, whatever that thing is. I am trying to get an earlier appointment. What can I do in the meantime? Did anyone have a baby with swallowing issues? What was it? How did you deal with it?
