AITJ for telling my best friend I won’t put my life on hold to babysit her newborn?
I (20F) have been best friends with Maya (20F) since childhood. She recently gave birth to a daughter (with no supportive co-parent). Before the baby, she asked if I’d occasionally babysit so she could rest or run errands. I agreed, within reason.
Once the baby arrived, the “occasional” turned into daily calls: “Can you come pick her up?”, “Drop by tonight?”, “I need a break.” She guilt-tripped me when I declined: “I’m so alone, you don’t understand,” “I gave birth so you owe me this.”
When I told her I’m applying for study abroad, she cried and accused me of abandoning her and her baby. She said I owed her because she’s sacrificed everything.
I gently told her I’m not the parent, I have my own goals, and I can’t be her backup every day. She hung up and is ignoring me. My mom says I should help since she’s in a tough spot but I feel my life shouldn’t stall for someone else’s baby.
