tw: blood
my sweet sweet lovey baby girl kiki had her first blood feather last night after having her for almost 10 years.
We were sitting together last night as always, and suddenly i go to kiss her and im met with a wet beak. confused, i touch my lip and realize there’s blood. A lot of blood. Mind you i’ve never even SEEN her blood before. i rush her downstairs and start to coat her wing in cornstarch but it just doesn’t stop. so i call the emergency vet ( it’s almost 12 am) and they say they can take her. i’m fortunate enough to live 6 minutes away so i got there incredibly fast. she was absolutely gushing blood. it was EVERYWHERE.
it was splattered on my face, my hands, my clothes and was dripping all over the emergency room. the staff were the best people i’ve ever interacted with. to help her not stress or hurt herself any further they decided to partially sedate her. this was horrifying to me but they convinced me it was the best idea. they gave her the sedation and pain meds and then they got to work on her wing. the sweet sweet nurse sat on the floor next to me with kiki as she was drifting off. they packed her wing with “kwik stop” a septic powder, and located the blood feather. they ended up leaving it in and then gave her some fluids. they then handed her to me and she slowly woke up over the course of 30 or so minutes after the reversal of the sedation.
they gave me a antibiotic/ pain med? that i give every 12 hrs for the next 5 days

my questions are, do i leave the powder on her wing? it seems like the whole area is really bothering her, rightfully so, and she is preening the area around the blood feather carefully. i’m keeping a close eye on her to make sure there will be no blood. the kwik stop power sort of mixed with her blood and it kinda hardening on her wing and i’m worried this is gonna stress her out because she’s very particular about her feathers being neat.

She is really covered in so much blood and i don’t know if i should leave it or try to wipe it with a warm cloth or something.
If any of you have any advice or tips and have been through this before please please let me know.
I feel so alone in this and online resources aren’t really helping me see aftercare options.
