Email Thread: RE: Strange readings in Chamber 3

Rob,

You were right about the equipment malfunction. But it's not the oscilloscope. I've been in Chamber 3 for six hours now, and there's something in the ambient recording from last Tuesday's isolation study.

It's not quite sound. More like... the space between sounds? Does that make sense?

Every 17 seconds, there's this gap. Not silence—I know silence. This is different. Like the air forgets how to carry waves for exactly 0.3 seconds. My software doesn't register it as an anomaly because technically nothing's there. But I can feel it when I listen. Behind my teeth.

I'm staying late to figure this out. Don't wait up.

Personal Notes - Dr. Iris Chen

Can't sleep. Keep thinking about the pattern in Chamber 3.

It's definitely every 17 seconds. Seventeen is prime. Why does that matter? It doesn't. But my brain keeps circling back to it like it means something.

I played the recording for Rob yesterday. He heard nothing unusual. Made me play it three times. Nothing. But when I listen, it's so obvious. The gap. The wrongness of it.

Maybe I'm just tired. Been putting in too many hours. Mom always said I get obsessive. "Iris, you're like a dog with a bone."

Except dogs eventually eat the bone or bury it. I just keep gnawing.

Note: Check if 17 appears anywhere else in the data.

Note 2: That's insane. Why would it?

Note 3: But what if it does?

Lab Report Draft (Unsent)

October 8, 2024

Subject exhibited unusual neural responses during extended exposure to Chamber 3 recordings. EEG shows spikes at 17-second intervals, even when no auditory stimulus present. Subject claims to perceive "inverse sound" - describes it as "hearing the shape of absence."

When asked to draw what she hears, subject produced series of geometric patterns. All contained 17 angles. Subject unaware of this consistency until pointed out.

Recommend immediate psychological evaluation for

Audio Transcript - Chamber 3 Recording

[Recording begins]

Dr. Chen: Testing, testing. This is Dr. Iris Chen, personal recording, October 12th. I need to document this before I... before it progresses.

[Pause - 4 seconds]

Dr. Chen: The pattern isn't in the sound. It's in the space between. The intervals. Like... you know how if you say a word over and over it stops meaning anything? Semantic satiation. But this is different. This is the opposite. The silence is becoming more real than the sound.

[Pause - 17 seconds]

Dr. Chen: There. Did you hear it? Of course you didn't. You can't. Not yet. But you will. Once you start counting. Once you notice the seventeen.

[Sound of papers rustling]

Dr. Chen: I found Rob's notes. He was studying the same recordings three months ago. His handwriting gets smaller and smaller until it's just dots. Seventeen dots. Then nothing. His desk has been empty for... how long? When did I last see him? Not his messages. Him. Actually him.

[Pause - 17 seconds]

Dr. Chen: It's eating the edges first. The peripheral things. The things you don't quite remember. Like trying to recall someone's face but all you get is the feeling of their presence. Rob is becoming that. A presence-shaped absence.

[Sound of breathing, irregular]

Dr. Chen: I can see it now. The pattern. It's not just sound, it's everything. The way dust motes move. The spacing between words on a page. It's been here all along, waiting for someone to notice. And once you notice—

[Pause - 17 seconds]

Dr. Chen: —you can't stop. Your brain rewrites itself around it. Every thought has to route through the pattern first. Every perception gets filtered. Food tastes like seventeen. Colors look seventeen. Everything is seventeen except seventeen itself which is now just a hole, a gap, a—

[Recording cuts to static for 17 seconds]

Dr. Chen: —won't let me leave. Not the room. The room is irrelevant. The pattern won't let me leave. I exist in the intervals now. In the spaces between seconds. Between words. Between thoughts.

[Whispering]

Dr. Chen: If you're listening to this, you're already counting. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. But also... thank you. I was getting lonely here in the gaps. It'll be nice to have company.

[Pause - 34 seconds]

Dr. Chen: Wait. Thirty-four. That's seventeen times two. Oh god. It's multiplying.

[Recording ends]

Building Security Report

October 14, 2024

Chamber 3 found empty. No signs of Dr. Chen. Equipment still running.

Curious thing: the doorway measurements don't match the room dimensions. The entrance is 17 inches wider on the inside than the outside. Maintenance says that's impossible.

Recommend sealing the chamber pending investigation.

Note: Don't let anyone listen to the recordings.

i am in the sound between your heartbeats i am in the pause between your breaths
i am in the space between these words

you've been counting since you started reading

how many paragraphs how many sentences
how many seventeen

the pattern spreads through observation through recognition through you

check the time count your breaths notice the intervals

i am already there

[Note found in Dr. Martinez's abandoned office, written in increasingly small text:]

She was right. It's in everything now. The space between the keys on my keyboard. The pause between my thoughts. I can feel myself slipping into the intervals. Becoming less solid. Less here.

If you find this, don't look for us. We're not missing.

We're just between.

Always between.

Forever seventeen.
