Returning player here. Did anything big change?

Came back to this game with all the hype around Megabonk. If you have the character upgrades all maxed out, and bought most items in the shop, what's the gold for exactly?

I tried playing on the fifth map I think (purple and full of goats) and it was very easy, is there a Hard mode or some alternate map that I can activate?
